From the Desk of the Warden

Dear Residents,

Just a quick reminder that the Borough will hold biennial elections on May 1, 2023. Towards that end, the following is intended as a primer for the upcoming Borough election season.

The election will be held for Warden, all six Burgesses, Treasurer, Clerk, and Tax Collector.

Anyone who is a Borough elector is eligible to run for any of these offices.

You can qualify as an elector in any one of the following ways:

  • be a resident of Fenwick and a registered voter in the Town of Old Saybrook;
  • own real property in the Borough of Fenwick, be at least 18 years old and a citizen of the United States;
  • be the beneficiary of a trust that owns real property in the Borough of Fenwick, be at least 18 years old, be a citizen of the United States and have resided in the Borough of Fenwick for two months during a calendar year.  (Note that the trustee must attest to your status as a beneficiary.)
  • be a member of a Connecticut Limited Liability Company (LLC) that owns real property in the Borough of Fenwick, be at least 18 years old, be a citizen of the United States and have resided in the Borough of Fenwick for two months during a calendar year.

As in past election years, the Board of Burgesses has appointed a Nominating Committee of Borough residents (Jim Wade, Duby McDowell, Charlie Millard, JD Rehm, Andrea Jones, and Ethel Davis) whose mandate is to generate candidates for all of the above offices.

The Chair of the committee is Jim Wade. If you have any interest in running for one of the positions, please contact Jim (jim@wadefam.com) and he will able to answer questions relating to the election.

Please note that, in accordance with statutes, an elector canvas is undertaken in the fall of the year preceding each election.  Information on this year’s canvas will be emailed and posted on the website this week.  Please return your canvass form in order to remain qualified as an elector.  Only qualified electors can fun for office or vote in the election.

Thank you and please let me know if you have any questions.

Best,
-Newt
